Walter Leroy Doremus, 83, of Kimball, Nebraska died Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at the Kimball Hospital. A funeral service was October 28, 2004 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Pastor Roger Gillming officiating. Visitation was Oct. 28 at the chapel. Interment was at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with military honors. Memorials have been established to Prairie Haven Hospice or to the Shelton Public School. Tributes of sympathy may be left at

Walter was born on September 30, 1921 in Shelton, Neb. to Clarence and Hazel (Marks) Doremus. He was raised and attended school in Shelton, graduating from Shelton High School in 1938. After high school he went to California and worked on a ranch breaking horses. He was united in marriage to Mayme M. Onstott on February 21, 1944 in California. He returned to western Nebraska and worked for several area farmers.

He enlisted with the Army Air Corps and was a radio operator on B17s during WWII, flying 35 missions. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Upon his honorable discharge, he and Mayme moved to Scottsbluff for a short time, before moving to Hay Springs to farm. In 1953, they took their family to Phoenix, then back to California, where Walt worked in the Farm Equipment business. In 1963, they returned to western Nebraska. He and Mayme owned and operated Doremus Equipment in Bayard before deciding to return to farming north of Bayard. In 1980, they moved to the Grand Island area, where he worked for several seed corn companies before retiring.
Walt was an avid fisherman and bowled and golfed. He enjoyed bird watching, traveling and liked seeing the different areas of country. He was a member of the American Legion.

Walt is survived by his children, LaDonna Eaton of New Orleans, La.; Norman Doremus of Greenleaf, Kan. and Karen Munoz of Kimball, Neb.; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters: Shirley Volguardsen of Cairo, Neb., and Charlotte Powell of Ogallala, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mayme in December 1994, brothers Clarence, Melvin and Donald, and sister Dorothy.
