Sergeant Thomas J. Jackson was the Sergeant in charge of the Motor Pool & Transportation for Charlie Battery, First Battalion, Twelfth Marines, Third Marine Division, III MAF in the Republic of South Vietnam from 1966 thru 1967. He was a driver MOS 3531.
Sergeant Thomas J. Jackson was exposed to Agent Orange (defoliant chemical) while in the Demilitarized Zone at Camp Carroll. He was in many operations at Gio Linh, Con Thien, Rock Pile, Razor Back, Ca Lu, Dong Ha, Khe Sanh, Cam Lo, and home base Camp Carroll. This area was Quang Tri Providence, known as Leatherneck Square.
Sergeant Thomas J. Jackson received a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle with the North Vietnamese Army.
I am honored to have served with him in Vietnam and to be able to take him home to his family after my second tour in Vietnam. We were stationed together at Camp LeJuene, North Carolina at the time of his discharge, and he asked me to go home with him and meet his wife and child. I visited him later after I was discharged, he was a Sheriff at the Lancaster Jail. Thomas came down with cancer from agent orange exposure and died very quickly, I was told by his Commander at the jail. I have missed him, but never forgot him.
Thomas died 5 years after he was exposed to Agent Orange while in Vietnam.
