A 13-year-old Ely boy is in custody of local police, suspected of shooting his mother twice with a deer rife Friday afternoon in their Central Ely mobile home.
According to Deputy Sergeant Dean Saderup, Margaret Lucile Henriod Baker, 36, of 2151 Ruby Street, died instantly of two close-range bullet wounds. Police recovered the rifle, a 30-30, in a shed behind the woman's residence.
Mrs. Baker, who was pregnant, was holding two jobs at the time of her death, as a waitress and as a school bus driver. She had worked in several local establishments as a waitress over the past few years.
According to Saderup, the shooting took place in the early afteroon in the mobile home kitchen. One bullet apparently struck Mrs. Baker in the side with the second shot hitting her in the back.
The body has been sent to the Clark County Coroner's Office for an autopsy, according to local Coroner Bill Nichols.
The child in custody has apparently denied shooting his mother intentionally. A determination will be made this afternoon whether to handle the case in Jevenile Court as manslaughter, or to take it to District Court as a murder. The 13-yeard-old has been held in the detention home since the shooting.
The shooting was apparently discovered by another of Mrs. Baker's sons, a 10-year-old, who went for the police.
Mrs. Baker was a life-long Ely resident. She was born Oct. 3, 1941 in Ely to Albert and Mary Hamilton Henriod. She was educated in White Pine schools.
Mrs. Baker enjoyed sports and played in local bowling and softball leagues.
Among her survivors are: her parents, of Ely; daughter, Cheryl Craw, and sons, Cecil Poole and John Baker, all of Ely; brothers, Albert Henriod, of Ely, John Henriod of Clarkston, Wash., and Leonard Henriod of Lewiston, Idaho. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral has been set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson-Bates Mortuary with Bishop Robert Butcher of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presiding.
Pallbearers will be Albert, John and Leonard Henriod, Larry Ellis, Mike Nollette and George Robertshay. Honorary bearers will be Dan Smith and Pete Nollette.
Burial will be in the Ely City Cemetery.
