George D. Cantonwine was the son of Jacob and Christena (Dilling) Cantonwine and grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.

Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." Eight or so years later, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob and Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in about 1814 in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

George took part in the Civil War as a private in Co. A of the 12th Iowa Volunteers (Union Army). He enlisted in September 1861 in Lithopolis, Iowa. Less than three months later, on Dec. 20, 1861, he entered Good Samaritan G. H. in St. Louis, Mo, with rubeola and died Jan 4, 1862 of pneumonia. His age: 21 years, 11 months, 29 days.

The 12th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry was organized at Dubuque and mustered on November 25, 1861. Four officers and 76 enlisted men of the 12th Regiment, Iowa Infantry, were killed and mortally wounded during service. Eight officers and 260 enlisted men died from disease. Total 348
