On the 1850 Census, Monroe was listed as a farmer in Titus County, Texas living with his parents. He served in the Confederate Army as a Sergeant in Company H of the 19th Texas Volunteer Infantry. He returned to farming in Morris County after the war. On the 1880 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Morris County, Texas living with his wife Emeline, his sons Rufus, James, Orange, Willie, Rip (Curtis), and Guy and his daughters Ora and Myrtle. On the 1900 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Morris County, Texas living with his son Curtis and his daughters Zelda and Vinita. He experienced a fall near the pond and lingered eight days before he died.
