According to the LaCrosse Daily Chronicle newspaper, LaCrosse, LaCrosse, WI of 09 Feb 1900, Pg 1**:

Edmund Ott, his wife, and child lived in Middle Ridge, a German settlement. The local paper says he went "temporarily insane, fearing death at the hands of an imaginary mob". In an attempt to save his wife and child from suffering at the mob's hands, he shot them both and then himself. He and the child died, but the wife, shot twice, recovered. His self inflicted gunshot also set fire to his clothing, burning their home to the ground.

** newspaper states in error that the child was an unnamed daughter and not their son, Peter.
