|Birth: ||Nov. 22, 1832|
John Bird Billings enrolled for duty in the Civil War on December 2, 1861 in St. Clair County, Missouri. He was 24 years old. He was part of Colonel Slayback's Company E, 2nd Missouri Infantry.
John was in the Battle of Elk Horn Tavern also known as The Battle of Pea Ridge, March 7-8, 1862. He was listed as present on Muster Rolls until he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Baker's Creek (Champion Hill) on May 16, 1863. As a Prisoner or War he was sent to Ft. Delaware, Delaware and then in December 1863 he was sent to City Point, Virginia for a prisoner exchange. The exchange occurred in February 1864 at which time he deserted.
In 1864 he married Nancy Jane Hood and together they had 10 children. John applied for veterans benefits on Aug 13, 1907 in Nevada County Arkansas and was approved. The last census record for him is 1910, Albany, Nevada, Arkansas. He is living with his son Sam Billings and his wife Lona along with their two children Hattie Mae and Claude.
I've not been able to locate a date of death for him yet and his tombstone has aged and weathered so much it's not possible to see that information anymore. The best estimate we have is that he died sometime between the 1910 and 1920 census.
