The Rev. John E. Vogler, who was a priest for 47 years at parishes in the St. Louis area, died Friday (May 14, 1999) of an apparent heart attack at a golf course in Arnold. He was 73.

Father Vogler had been playing golf with a longtime friend, the Rev. Ira Bell, when he collapsed about 1 p.m., a family member said.

Father Vogler was most recently chaplain at Immaculate Heart Convent in Normandy. He was pastor of St. Ann's Church in Normandy from 1985 to 1991 and still resided at the St. Ann rectory.

Father Vogler grew up in St. Louis and entered Prepatory Seminary in 1942. After graduating from Cardinal Glennon College in 1948, he entered Kenrick Seminary and was ordained a priest on March 8, 1952, by Cardinal Joseph Ritter.

While a seminary student, Father Vogler was a counselor at Camp Don Bosco for boys and was involved in Boy Scout activities for many years. He was also active in forming, moderating and counseling many Catholic youth organizations throughout St. Louis. He was active in sports all his life and a fan of the old St. Louis Browns, the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis University Billikens.

Father Vogler was an assistant pastor at St. Raphael the Archangel Church in St. Louis from 1952 to 1959. He was later assistant pastor at Nativity of Our Lord Church in St. Louis, at Annunciation Church in Webster Groves and at St. Mary Magdalen Church in St. Louis. From 1967 to 1970, he also served as the archdiocesan director of the Bishops Overseas Relief Fund.

In 1970, Father Vogler was named pastor of Most Holy Trinity in St. Louis. During his stay there, he was active in the Hyde Park Renovation Project and carried on a church program to give food and clothing to the poor.

He was also pastor of St. David's Church in Arnold, where he helped start a school and built a parish center building with a gymnasium.

Among the survivors are two sisters, Bernice Geisz of St. Ann and Grace Sullivan of St. Charles; and two brothers, Raymond Vogler of Lemay and Joseph Vogler of Cool Valley.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Stygar-Drehmann-Harral Funeral Home at 7733 Natural Bridge Road. The Knights of Columbus will hold a rosary service at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will also be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann Church in Normandy. A funeral Mass will be celebrated there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Father Bell will be the main celebrant, and Father Vogler's former classmates will participate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
