John Franklin Gray- age 87, born November 27, 1922, a longtime resident of Mobile, AL, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday April 6. John was preceded in death by his parents Gable Gray and Alice Gray-Russell, first wife of 30 + years and the mother of his children Ruth Ramsey Gray. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Rev. Edwina Gray, six children, John (Brenda) Gray of Mobile, AL, Rhonda Gray of New Orleans, LA, Alice Gray of Atlanta, GA, Gordon (Brenda) Gray of Mobile, AL, Danielle Gray of Mobile, AL, Gable Gray of Atlanta, GA, two step-daughters, Angela (John) Stallworth of Frisco, TX, LaJeana (Kenneth) Williams of Fairhope, AL, five grandchildren, Terrance, Kiristen, Deidra, Philip, and Tamara Gray of Mobile, AL, eight step-grand children, Brittany, Shantel and Xavier of Frisco, TX, Jasmine, Jakorey, Destiny, Kenneth, and Kenyon of Fairhope, AL, two great grandchildren, cousins, Pearl Gray Daniels of Washington, DC, Fred (Carol) Gray of Tuskegee, AL, Thomas (Juanita) Gray of Montgomery, AL, sister-in-law, Janie (Ronald) Heard of Sparks, NV, other relatives and friends. John was a longtime member of Big Zion AME Zion Church until his marriage in 2001 to Rev. Edwina Gray, Associate Minister at Hope Chapel A.M.E. Zion where he became an active member until his death. Mr. Gray worked in the Mobile County Public School System for over 50 years, receiving numerous honors and awards. He was a member of the P.L. Wilson Detachment, Inc. #447, Marie Corps League, a member of the Montford Point Marine Association, Inc. and Veteran of WWII. Mr. Gray was named Veteran of the year in 2007 by the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Day Commission. He also starred in the Ken Burns Documentary, "The War", filmed in 2007. Visitation will be Monday evening April 12, 2010 from 6:00-8:00pm at Bishop State Baker-Gaines Central Campus Auditorium, 1365 Dr. M.L.K. Jr. Ave., and Tuesday April 13, 2010 from 10:00am until the 11:00am funeral hour at Big Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, 112 S. Bayou St. Mobile, AL, Rev. Sanders H. Mason III officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery. Arrangements by CHRISTIAN BENEVOLENT FUNERAL HOME 201 N. HAMILTON ST. MOBILE, AL 36603
