Ben's obituary is borrowed from Cecil's funeral home:
" Mr. Ben Lewis Poston, 77, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, after suffering an aneurysm.
A resident of the Woodbridge community at Route 3, he retired after a professional career in social services at the county and state levels.
Born Nov. 2, 1931, he was the son of the late Summie A. Poston and Minnie Connor Poston and grew up in Shelby's Dover community. At the age of 17, he volunteered for the Navy and served four years during the Korean War on the USS Condor and other ships. Back in Shelby, he returned to studies and graduated from Shelby High School and Gardner-Webb Junior College before earning a bachelor's degree at Limestone College.
At the time a juvenile probation officer, he was recruited as the first executive of the newly formed Cleveland County Boys Club (now the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland County), and established its initial organization and programs. Subsequently, he served as a regional quality analyst for the N.C. Department of Social Services until retiring.
Chief among his other interests and volunteer activities were scouting and water safety. His scouting interests were sustained from his youth. He and his four brothers each achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, a first among North Carolina families at the time. He later served as a scoutmaster and member of the Eagle Award review board. He was certified as an American Red Cross water safety instructor and often provided swimming and boating lessons for area youth.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, C. B. Poston of Rutherfordton, Dr. E. Eugene Poston of Boiling Springs and the Rev. Carl E. Poston of Shelby.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, the former Patsy (Pat) Cook; son, Lewis P. Poston; daughter, Laura P. Cummings and husband, Mark Cummings; and grandchildren, Allison and Christopher Cummings, all of the Kings Mountain area; sisters, Annie Poston Sisk of Shelby and Dorothy (Dot) Poston Bridges and her husband, Forrest Bridges, of Cherryville; brother, Bobby L.
