He was appointed Postmaster of Covington, Indiana on May 20, 1897. He held this position until January of 1914.
"Fletcher W. Boyd, aged 58, former Covington Postmaster and more recently superintendent of Indiana Masonic Home at Franklin, died Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis. He was removed to the hospital 10 days ago after a short illness at his home, death resulting, it is said, from brain fever.
The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. Boyd and had spent most of his life in Covington. He moved to Indianapolis 16 years ago from here, and thence to Franklin 12 years ago, when he became superintendent of the Masonic home there. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ollie Boyd, and one son, Emmerson Boyd of Franklin, and one brother and two sisters; William Boyd, Mrs. Stanley Pavey and Mrs. Mertie Boyd, all of Indianapolis.
Masonic funeral services were held at the state home at Franklin at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. The funeral party then traveled overland to Covington for Masonic burial rites at Mt. Hope Cemetery which were held at 4:00 p.m.
Fletcher Boyd was a model man and citizen known and loved by all who knew him, as attested by the throng that accompanied the body here from Indianapolis and Franklin and who mourn and sympathize with the bereaved." - Covington Republican, June 20, 1930
