After losing both his wife and baby, John joined the Indiana Volunteers, Co. C. 34th Indiana, August 28, 1861, during the civil war. He died in New Haven, Camp Wickliffe, Kentucky, March 25, 1862 of typhoid fever. He was 24 years of age.
