First woman to cast an official vote for a political office,in 1876 she attended the Democratic State Convention,there was one delegate absent,Abby took his place and nominated Zebulon B. Vance for governor.During the Civil War she once searched for 12 days in the aftermath of the Battle of Fredericksburg to find a dead relative,she located him and had him properly buried.
On her gravestone was written, "Angel of Mercy to Confederate Soldiers."
