Manuel was born in Ribeira das Tainhas, a village outside of Vila Franca do Campo, on São Miguel island in the Azores to José de Mello and Francisca de Conceição/de Jesus. He immigrated to Boston, MA in 1903. He married in 1905 to Maria Gloria "Gloria" Correia. Manuel and Gloria had six children, four of which lived to adulthood: Bill Mello, George Mello, John Mello, and Jack Mello. Manuel was an apricot rancher in Hemet. He died in Redlands at the age of 74.

Rosary for Manuel Mello, 75, of 444 North Tayler street, a Hemet resident since 1924, will be recited tomorrow (Wednesday) at 8 p.m. at the Harford Funeral home. Requiem mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic church in San Jacinto.
He died Monday morning at a Redlands hospital, after living in California since 1907.
Mello was born in the Azores on April 18, 1886.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic church, and had extensive apricot holdings here, until his retirement in 1956.
Survivors include his widow, Gloria; four sons, William and John of Hemet, George of Inglewood, and Jack of Reno, Nevada; a sister, Mrs. Estorella (sic) Mello of West Warwick, Rhode Island; some unidentified brothers in the Azores; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Michael Heenan will officiate and interment will be at San Jacinto Valley cemetery.

Hemet - Rosary was recited last night at Harford Funeral Home for Manuel Mello, 75, a San Jacinto Valley apricot industry figure for more than 30 years.
Rev. Michael Heenan will say the Requiem Mass at San Jacinto's St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 9 a.m. today, followed by burial in San Jacinto Valley Cemetery.
Mello was born in the Azores April 18, 1886, and came to Providence, R.I., as a youth. He moved to Redlands in 1907 and to Hemet in 1924. He retired from active ranching five years ago.
Mello died in a Redlands hospital Monday.
Survivors include the widow, Gloria, 444 North Taylor; four sons, William and John of Hemet, George of Inglewood, and Jack of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Mrs. Esterella (sic) Mello of West Warwick, R.I., several brothers still residing in the Azores; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
