Adam S. Rider, aged abut 60 years, committed suicide Saturday by hanging himself with a rope about two and a half feet in length in an outbuilding at the rear of his residence on East Main street, Hummelstown. The man's lifeless body was found hanging in the building shortly after noon by a boarder in the Rider home after he had been missing from the residence for several hours. After notifying Coroner Jacob Eckinger, at Harrisburg, of the suicide, the assistance of Constable W. H. Koppenhaver was secured and he, in company with George A. Spidle, went to the Rider residence and removed the body from the outbuilding to the house. The Coroner decided that no inquest was necessary. Rider was a resident of the borough for nearly a year, having moved to this place last April from Poorman's school house near Hockersville. He was employed at times by John M. Curry at Swatara and by Jacob Stahley, east of town, and at various times during the past several months complained of unsteady employment and remarked that he would hang himself. The dead man is survived by his widow and a daughter by a former marriage, Miss Laura Rider, of Middletown. The funeral will take place from his late residence to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock. Short services will be held at the house after which the body will be taken to Trinity Lutheran church, near Colebrook, where services will be conducted by the Rev. O. G. Romig, of Hershey. Interment will be made in the church cemetery. Published in the Harrisburg Daily Independent, 9 Feb 1914, Monday, Page 1. [Biography provide by F.A.G. contributor Meg Wiley]
