Born at St. Joseph's Hospital, Germantown, Louisville. Lived in Germantown until he moved with his parents and sister to the Audubon Vale neighborhood in the mid-1950s (near what is now the Beargrass Nature Reserve). Attended St. Xavier High School and University of Louisville.

Served in the U.S. Army in Korea 1958-1961. Worked most of his life at Brown & Williamson in various managerial positions. Married Sarah in 1965 and had two children. Moved in 1980 to Macon, GA (still working for the same company) until he retired and returned to Louisville in 1996.

A talented cook whose specialties were Italian, German, and Irish cuisine, he also loved mysteries (particularly Inspector Morse), classical music (especially Beethoven) and crossword puzzles. For most of his adult life he owned a classic Volkswagen Beetle (Type 1) that he cherished.

He died peacefully at Klondike Manor on a Monday night in the presence of his devoted daughter. Survived also by his widow and son.

Happy Birthday, Daddy. But, oh, see what has become of me. I need to move back home, but your widow my mother will not let me in the door. What will I do?
