Birth: 1842

Beaver Dam

Beaver Dam Argus Newspaper, 4 Nov 1871, pg 3 - Man Drowned -- On Sunday past a Polander, by the name of August Winkler was drowned in the lake near Dennings gravel pit. He was out hunting ducks, and his gun and clothing were found on shore, it is supposed he swam in after a duck, became cramped in cold water and was thus drowned, as he has been in the habit of thus going in after his game. Dilligent search has been made by several parties, but up to this time his body has not been recovered. He was a young man, 28 years of age, leaves a wife and two children, and the wife soon to give birth to another child. (note: August disapppeared 29 Oct 1871)

Beaver Dam Argus Newspaper, 25 April 1872, pg 3 - Body Found -- On Friday evening last, a party sailing on the lake discovered a dead body floating in the water, which was brought down to the dam on Saturday morning, and proved to be the body of August Winkler, the Polander who was drowned last fall. The body was of course much swollen, but was otherwise very well preserved and at once recognizable. The position of the body--one arm extended, and the other drawn to the side--indicated that he was swimming and taken with cramp, as was supposed at the time. (Note: He was found 19 Apr 1872, and recovered 20 Apr 1872.)

Note: He was found 4 days after the birth of his daughter, Cecelia, 15 Apr 1872.
