He graduated Mercer University, Macon, GA in 1856 and taught one year in Georgia. He then moved to Tyler, Texas where he taught 17 years. He moved to Texas A&M College, College Station, where he was professor of "dead languages," and then became superintendent in Brenham, Corsicana (1882) and Dallas City Public Free Schools (1887-1891).
His parents were Isaiah Hand (South Carolina) and Hannah Louisiana Henderson (North Carolina). He married Helen Jane Spurlin (Georgia) on 17 Dec 1857 in Troup County, Georgia.
He is survived by his widow Mrs. J. T. Hand and children: Mrs. J. W. Lambard, Cleburne; Bartow B. Hand, Cleburne; Mrs. H. L. Reed, Omaha, Neb; and Mrs. S. M. Kerr, Corsicana. Daughter Lula (Telulah) Corinne Hand, first married Jack Baker and later Henry L. Reed.
