Anthony Concialdi, 72, a retired Chicago police sergeant who survived a dramatic shoot-out in 1957 at police headquarters at 11th and State, died Wednesday in Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington.
A Crystal Lake resident, he retired from the Chicago Police Department several years ago. At the time, he taught CPR to new recruits. Most of his early career was spent with the Foster Avenue District and the old 35th District on the Near North Side.
He earned a number of commendations and citations, the most publicized in June, 1957, when he was cited for bravery after being involved in a gunfight at police headquarters.
A prisoner being taken to the lockup by then Officer Concialdi and his partner wrestled a gun from the partner's holster and fatally shot the officer. As Sgt. Concialdi tried to wrestle the gun loose, he, too, was shot. Despite suffering wounds in the arm and leg, Sgt. Concialdi managed to wound the offender as he ran down a corrider threatening to shoot everyone in sight.
Sgt. Concialdi, born in Chicago, lived in the Mayfair area on the Northwest Side for many years. He served in the Army in the European and Pacific theaters in World War II. Before joining the Police Department, he operated a cab company with a group of other veterans.
He leaves his wife, Marian; four sons, Anthony Jr., Frank, Michael and Thomas; three daughters, Lisa Kucera, Jena Hoffmeister and Roseann; two brothers, Tom and Joseph, and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. today in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1023 McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake. A private burial was being planned.
