He was born in Taylor Co., VA, however, that county became part of WV when the Commonwealth of VA split in 2.

Union Army
WV
Co. G, 127 U.S. Colored Inf Div (CID)
45th Regt. U.S. Colored Troops
Recruited.
Enlisted: 8/22/1864, Mustered in next day.
His name is on a list for UNCLAIMED MEDALS (for 'colored' vets & 'regular' vets), however, the list I saw did not say what specific medal it was BUT it is one of the following 3:
Class I: "Honorably Discharged"
Self-explanatory. (It would have to be his category b/c he survived the Civil War.)
Class II: "Killed in Battle" Self-explanatory.
Class III: "For Liberty" for those that died of disease & or wounds from battle.
So many went unclaimed b/c they were not commissioned/made until a yr after the war ended & by then many living soldiers had dispersed to other states (& didn't even know they were entitled to any such thing) & for many of those that died in the war the state couldn't find living relatives to send them to, HOWEVER, TO THIS DAY if you can provide proof of being a relative (even cousins not just grandkids [great's]) you can claim through a process from the state of WV the medal. Appx 200 are unclaimed for 'colored' troops in addition to the 3,800 for 'regular' troops. Each medal actually has the name of the soldier engraved on the side of it.

The 45th was the only black reg assigned in WV during the Civil War.
The 45th was made up of men from WV, VA & PA & most were either freed or escaped slaves.
