Originally from the state of Georgia, John's residence was Nassau County, FL when he enlisted on April 18, 1944 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, GA. His combat group was the U.S. Army 232nd Infantry 42nd Division or the nicknamed the "Rainbow Division", which was in the Battle of the Bulge. This battle raged in snowy and sub-freezing temperatures from December 16, 1944 to January 28, 1945. There were heavy causalities, and it was during this time John Howard was KIA. He served our nation for 10 months and one day. Prior to the war, he was a farmer and was married. The Florida State Census 1945 enumerates him with wife Geneva and 3 children. He was a Purple Heart recipient.

It is an honor to have John's name on the Nassau County War Memorial at the end of Centre on Amelia Island, FL
