Ohio, USA
Death: Jun. 18, 1947

Teacher/education administrator and innovator. Nationally recongized for developing adult education programs in Denver. Started the Opportunity School, renamed upon her retirement to the Emily Griffith Opportunity School at 13th and Welton Streets in downtown Denver-the school is now known as the Emily Griffith Technical College. The school, located in downtown Denver and started in 1916, is the oldest institution in the nation dedicated to providing adult vocational and technical education and serves approximately 14,000 students each year. In addition, the Emily Griffith High School is an alternative competency-based program which offers a high school diploma upon successful completion of courses. Prior to establishing the Opportunity School, Griffith was Deputy State Superintendent of Schools from 1904 to 1908, and Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1910 to 1912. Shot to death along with her sister Florence in an apparent, but unsolved and unproven, murder-suicide involving a former teacher at the school, purportedly acting in a mercy capacity due to the declining health of the sisters.
