LIFESPAN OF GERTRUDE JOANNA STREETER PECKHAM BY GERTRUDE JOANNA STREETER PECKHAM
I was born on December 8, 1899 in the Town of Venice, Cayuga County, New York, on the Ford Road, to Clarence Burton and Augusta Morey Streeter. I was the youngest of three children -
Lois Mildred, born February 6, 1894, married to Mr. Floyd H. Clark. Mildred and Floyd had twin boys, Donald and Gerald born November 21, 1927 and two girls, Lois Marian born September 18, 1931 and Marjorie Irene born August 18, 1933.
Ivan J. born September 20, 1895, married to Florence Margaret Atwater, and passed away on September 10, 1964. Ivan and Florence had three sons, Willis Burton born June 16, 1921, Robert Ivan born October 5, 1924, Stanley Joseph born October 18, 1926 and one daughter, Ruth Jane born April 11, 1928.
At the age of 3 months my family moved to the brick house 1 1/2 miles south of Venice Center, Cayuga County, New York, now the home of Mr. Donald Muncy.
I attended grade school at District #10, Venice Center, Cayuga County, New York. After the 8th grade I attended Genoa School for 1 1/2 years and rode back and forth each day on the Short Line Railroad. In September 1914 I started my 2nd year at Moravia High School. I graduated from Moravia High School in 1917. In September of 1917 I attended Moravia Training Class for teachers. I graduated in June 1918 with a license to teach. I taught for two years in Parker District on Stewart Corner Road.
In April of 1916 I moved with my parents to the Fell place on Indian Field Road now owned by Mr. Robert Myers. In April of 1919 I moved to the farm on top of Venice Hill East, now owned by Mr. John Rejman and the house owned by Mr. Kenneth Head.
On June 26, 1920 I married Charles Oscar Peckham, son of Fred J. and Minnie E. Richardson Peckham with the wedding being held at my home. Charles and I went to Bolts Corners, Town of Scipio to live. I taught school at Bolts Corners from 1920-1924.
In 1924 I came to teach in Poplar Ridge, Cayuga County, New York until December of 1927 when my first daughter, Alma Elizabeth was born on Christmas Eve. She is married to Joseph George Rice and lives in Tucson, Arizona. She has seven daughters and one son.
In 1929 I substituted teaching from March to June at Pickins District, Wycoffs Road. On October 30, 1929 my second daughter, Eleanor Marie was born. She is married to Richard Thomas Marks and lives in Venice Center, Cayuga County, New York. She has three daughters and two sons.
In 1929 Charles and I bought the grocery store in Poplar Ridge, New York from his stepfather, Mr. Glen D. Smith. In 1930 I came back to Poplar Ridge to teach. After driving back and forth for one winter, we sold our Bolts Corners home and moved to Poplar Ridge where Marie Krueger now lives. In the spring of 1932 we moved to my present home #1867 Poplar Ridge Road across from the Friends Church. During the years of the grocery store with my husband, I substituted teaching in grades at Sherwood Central School.
My grandfather, Josiah F. Streeter, was Town Clerk for many years. Mr. S. W. Kenyon a very few years, and then Mr. Charles L. Clark, Sr.. The job then went back to Josiah F. Streeter until his death in 1928 and the term was finished by his wife, Alice J. Crawfoot Streeter. It was then taken over by Mr. Charles Putnam.
On March 29, 1945 Mr. Charles Putnam, Town Clerk, had the misfortune to have his house burn and he was forced to leave the Town of Venice and live with his daughter, Edith Manchester, in the Town of Moravia. Mr. Everett Cook, Town Justice, tried to talk Charles into taking the office of Town Clerk, but to no avail. He started trying to persuade me to take the office and I finally consented and was appointed by the town board and assumed office on April 7, 1945.
I have worked with the following Supervisors - Charles W. Clark, Sr., Everett Cook, Horace Reynolds, John Baildon, Thomas Costello, Clarence Stevens and Charles Perkins.
Other town board members who I have worked with and are now living were George DeForest, Sr., Raymond Donald, Byron Culver, Wesley Scott, Ralph Grover, Elliott Main. The present board members are Herbert Sherman, Walter Rejman, Louis Fedrizzi, Richard Talcott, Town Highway Superintendent - Arthur Meyers (deceased) Raymond Head, Edward Geiger and Elwood Parmley.
The office of Town Clerk is an office which hasn't changed hands too many times in my time. I have enjoyed the Town Clerk work for nearly 30 years. It is interesting but becoming more difficult each year.
I wish success to our new Town Clerk, Joan C. Stevens. I hope she will enjoy her work as well as I have.
