He served in Capt. Stewart's Independent Company, Florida Infantry. In Oct.1863 he was guarding the Columbus Bridge on the Suwannee River. In Dec. 1863 the 6th Battalion Florida Infantry was formed of 7 Independent Companies and was consolidated with 3 Independent companies to form the 9th Regiment Florida Infantry. In concentrating the troops between Waldo and Jacksonville after the battle of Olustee, Lieut Col Martin was placed in command of the batalion. Upon the arrival of the battalion in Virginia, the regiment was formed and the seven companies became A,B,C,D,E,F,and G under their respective Captains. On June 5,1864 John L Crawford was killed at Cold Harbor.
Cold Harbor, Virginia is reputed to have been one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, within 30 minutes the Union Army lost 7000 men. John L. Crawford's body was never sent home nor, has his death been recorded in a cemetery. Perhaps he was buried where he fell, known but to God.
