LIFE STORY OF ANTON HOFFMANN, 81
Anton Hoffmann was born on February 11, 1870 at Chilton, Wisconsin and came to Washington Township, Shelby County, Iowa at the age of ten years with his parents Lambert and Anna Hoffmann.
He received his education at Westphalia, Iowa and was married in Earling, Iowa to Mary Wingert by the Rev. J. B. Hummert. Two years later they settled on a farm north of Panama, Iowa, now occupied by their son, Edward. In 1914 they retired to their present home in Panama.
He passed away late Sunday afternoon, September 16, 1951 at Neola, Iowa, enroute home from Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 5 days.
Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Church Wednesday morning, September, 19, 1951 at nine o'clock with Msgr. M. B. Schiltz officiating at the Requiem High Mass. He also delivered the sermon, citing many instances of Mr. Hoffmann's helpfulness during the pioneering days of St. Mary's and of his devotion to his family, home and church. Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Panama.
The pallbearers were Alfons and Henry Hoffmann, Alfred, Ray and Louis Wingert and Walter Finken.
Members of the Holy Name Society, of which Mr. Hoffmann was a member, attended the funeral in a body. He was also a member of the Catholic Knights of America.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Frederick and Edward; three daughters, Mrs. Louis M. (Mathilda) Kobolt, Mrs. Anton "Tony" (Alexia) Schwery and Mrs. Walter (Cornelia) Leuschen; one sister, Mrs. John P. (Mary) Wingert of Osmond, Nebraska, twenty-nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Perry and daughter Kathleen, Fred, Patricia and Marge Kobolt of Kansas City, Kansas, Mrs. Anna Hoffmann of San Leandro, California, Mrs. and Mrs. John P. Wingert of Osmond, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. George Thelen of Randolph, Nebraska, Mrs. Sam Branch and son Arthur and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pimple of Almena, Wisconsin and Mr. and Mrs. John A. Schoenherr and son John of Mapleton, Iowa.
