Henry Standing was born at Leigh, Lancashire county, England February 11, 1857. the first child of George and Deborah Standing. When eight years of age he was enrolled in the Ackworth Friends School where he remained until 1870 during which year he accompanied his parents to America. The family settled in the Quaker community near Earlham, Iowa, in what was known as the Bear Creek neighborhood.
On the 25th of March 1883 he was united in marriage to Eunice Peacock, daughter of Elwood and Naomi Peacock, who were members of the North Branch Friends meeting near Earlham. Soon after his marriage he moved to Charles Mix county, South Dakota where the "took a claim" along with his brothers Ernest and George. After seven years in Dakota he returned to Iowa and settled on the "Senior" farm appoximately four miles north of Earlham. Here he lived continuously until two years after the death of his wife on January 5th, 1913.
Nine children were born to Henry and Eunice Standing. Two are deceased, one dying in infancy in Dakota and the other Bertha in 1899 while attending the Friends Boarding School near Stavanger, Iowa.
In 1915 he was married to Sina A. Rich of West Branch, Iowa and shortly thereafter moved his residence to West Branch where he spent the remainder of his active life as a florist. His second wife, Sina, passed away in the summer of 1924. During the last seven years of his life he made his home with his eldest daughter, Edith R. Peckham in Altadena, California. It was in her home that he passed away peacefully on the evening of February 12, 1937 aged eight years and one day.
Surviving him are three brothers, George and Alfred of Earlham, Iowa and Josiah of Beaumont, California. His sister, Edith Rebecca and brothers, Ernest and Charles preceded him in death. He left behind seven children; Edith, wife of Robert Peckham of Altadena, California; Jesse of Whittier, Iowa; Gilbert of Earlham, Iowa; Charles of Altadena, California; Ellen of Ottumwa, Iowa; Theodore of Iowa City, Iowa; and Martha, wife of Dr. Paul Foster of Iowa City, Iowa. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
