Cardinal Hyacinthe Thiandoum, Former Archbishop of Dakar and Cardinal Priest of the Title of Santa Maria del Popolo, was born on February 2, 1921, in Poponguine, within the Archdiocese of Dakar, Sénégal, as the son of François Ndiémé, who was a Catechist and a fisherman who cultivated the millet and groundnut during the winter, and Anna Ndiémé Sène. He was named in memory of Hyacinthe Gallabert, Former Bishop of Sénégambie well before the Independence. He spent his early life in a milieu in which the Muslims were the majority. One of his brothers was a Muslim and some of his nephews are Imams.
Following his education at the Regional Seminary of Dakar, and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, from where he obtained a Licentiate in Philosophy and Sociology, Hyacinthe was ordained to the Priesthood on April 18, 1949, in Dakar, by Msgr. Marcel François Lefèbvre, C.S.Sp., Archbishop of the Titular See of Arcadiopoli di Europa. He worked in the Archdiocese of Dakar, where he was among others responsible for the Catholic Action; Pastor of the Cathedral and Vicar General.
Aged 41, he was elected as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Dakar on February 24, 1962, receiving his Episcopal Consecration of the following May 20, from Msgr. Jean-Marie Maury, Titular Archbishop of the See of Laodicea di Frigia, Internuncio in Sénégal and Apostolic Delegate in Western French Africa, assisted by Msgr. Bernardin Gantin, Archbishop of Cotonou and Future Cardinal Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, and by Msgr. Prosper Dodds C.S.Sp., Bishop of Ziguinchor. Thiandoum served furthermore as President of the Episcopal Conference of Sénégal-Mauritania and Vice - President of the Episcopal Pan-African Symposium.
Pope Paul VI created him Cardinal Priest in the Consistory of May 24, 1976, with the Title of Santa Maria del Popolo. His moral authority went beyond the Christian Community. He had in fact excellent relations with the Muslim Community and especially with the Marabout Thierno Saïdou Nourou Tall, whom he called Mon Père. Thiandoum was the First Cardinal from Sénégal.
Retiring from the Pastoral Government of his See on June 2, 2000, the Cardinal died on May 18, 2004, at 6 pm., at the Geriatric Hospital "Saint Thomas de Villeneuve" in Aix-en-Provence, France, aged 83, was interred inside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Dakar on May 27, 2004.
