Former Bishop of the Diocese of Litoměřice, Monsignor Josef Koukl was born in Brno, in the former Czechoslovakia on November 8, 1926, and was raised in Breclav, where his father taught at the Grammar School.
Finishing the Grammar School in Brno in 1945, Koukl entered the Theological Faculty in Prague, being ordained to the Priesthood at 23 years of age on April 24, 1950, in St Adalbert's Church of Prague - Dejvice.
Successively, he served in Sokolov, finishing in 1953, his compulsory Military Service and rendering his Ministry in some Parishes including St. Vitus's Cathedral, Stodulky, Kladruby and Stribra.
Appointed Spiritual Director of the Seminary of Litoměřice on November 17, 1970, in March 1974, he obtained a Doctorate in Theology and the following September, began teaching Moral Theology at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Faculty in Litoměřice. He was also appointed Canon of the All Saints Chapter at Prague's Castle.
Aged 62, Canon Koukl was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Litoměřice by Pope John Paul II, receiving his Episcopal Consecration inside St. Stephen's Cathedral on August 27, 1989, from Cardinal František Tomášek, assisted by Archbishop Francesco Colasuonno and Bishop Jan Lebeda.
Retiring from Office at 77 years of age on December 24, 2003, Bishop Josef Koukl was succeeded by Msgr. Pavel Posád. He passed away on Saturday, May 22, 2010, aged 83, inside his Episcopal residence.
