Former Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Eger, Hungary, and Bishop of the Titular See of Media, Monsignor Endre Kovács O.Cist., was until his demise, one of the only six living Cistercian Monks to be elevated to the Episcopate.
Born in Egerbakta, Hungary, he joined the Order of Cistercian Monks - a Monastic Order founded on March 21, 1098 - and was ordained to the Priesthood aged 23, on April 8, 1951.
Aged 47, Kovács was named Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Eger by Pope Paul VI, receiving his Episcopal Consecration with the Titular See of Media on February 6, 1975, from Archbishop József Ijjas, assisted by Archbishops József Bánk and László Lékai.
Bisho Kovács retained his post as an Auxiliary until his retirement at the age of 75, on January 15, 2003. He passed away in Eger at the age of 79, on Sunday, July 29, 2007, and was interred in the Crypt of Eger's Cathedral.
