Daniel Francis Lenihan was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 28, 1907. He died in the Monastery Infirmary on Sunday, July 29, 2012, one day after his 105th birthday.
As a young man of 23, a parishioner of Visitation Parish on Chicago's south side he helped Bishop Sheil start the first meetings of the Catholic Youth Association.
Fr. Daniel was a Second World War veteran serving in General Bradley's army in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, Rhineland and Central Europe. He worked in counter-intelligence and received the silver battle star among other honors.
He entered New Melleray Abbey on May 17, 1946, was professed two years later and ordained to the Priesthood on May, 3, 1955. During his 66 years with us Father Daniel served the community generously in numerous roles; at different times he was Prior, Procurator and Guest Master. His last job was Mass secretary which he faithfully did until three months before his death. As Mass secretary he would answer all requests using his sturdy Underwood Portable Typewriter. As Guest Master he made hundreds of friends throughout the Midwest and was known for hearing "5th steps" and helping anyone in trouble.
Father Daniel was a man of character, sure of his opinions and not afraid to speak his mind; he was a stout-hearted man ever faithful to the Liturgy and community life.
On the twenty-fifth of July, 2012, the Mayor and City Council of Chicago passed a Resolution declaring July 28, 2012, "shall be recognized as Father Daniel Lenihan Day throughout the City of Chicago."
From the time he turned one-hundred Fr. Daniel, on his birthday, would be the main celebrant and homilist at the community Mass. He did this up to his 104th year. In one of his homilies he reminisced, "We return to 1945 and the sleeping soldier: a soldier is shaking him and saying, 'Hey soldier you've been dreaming and we are approaching New York, you had better get up.' And I am still dreaming." Now in eternity at last Fr. Daniel's dreams have come true.
A public wake for Father Daniel was held on Wednesday evening from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, August 2, at 2.30 in the afternoon.
