On the morning of June 10, 2002, a 71-year-old man identified as Robert Lloyd Jeffress of Kearney went through the Basilica into the Conception Monastery, killed Brother Damian Larson, 62, and Father Philip Schuster, 85, and wounded Father Kenneth Reichert, 68, and Father Norbert Schappler, 75, before retreating into the Basilica where he shot and killed himself.
Father Schuster was the porter, the Monastery's official greeter. Brother Damian was the groundskeeper and self-taught meteorologist often referred to as the "weather monk" for his accurate predictions of conditions in the northwestern corner of Missouri.
The motive for this assault remains unknown to this day.
Father Philip and Brother Damian Larson were buried in plain pine caskets, side-by-side at St. Columba's Cemetery across the Abbey, following the celebration of a Requiem Mass at the Abbey Basilica which saw the participation of 1200 people.
