Abbot Dom Gabriele M. Ferraresi of the Benedictine Olivetan Order passed away at the tender age of 39, on Thursday, January 13, 2011, only 40 days after receiving his Abbatial Blessing.
Born at Vigonzone, Torrevecchia, Province of Pavia, Italy, to Pietro and Maria Luisa Ferraresi, he had an elder brother, Angelo. Joining the Benedectine Olivetan Monastery of Lendinara in 2001, he underwent studies in Theology at Padua, being ordained Deacon by Msgr. Lucio Soravito in 2007. Bishop Giovanni Giudici ordained him to the Priesthood the following year.
During these years, Dom Gabriele suffered from a pulmonary tumour. He was diagnosed again in 2009, this time from an anedocarcinoma, but he survived the disease "through the intercession of Our Lady", he would later state himself the day he received his Abbatial Blessing.
The Conventual Chapter of the Olivetan Monks, elected him Rector of the Basilica della Beata Vergine del Pilastrello di Lendinara, succeeding Abbot Diego M. Rosa, who was elected Abbot General of the Order. Ferraresi received his Abbatial Blessing and Episcopal Insignia on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, becoming thus the youngest Benedictine Abbot in the world.
However a few days later, the Abbot was stricken by a fulminate bronco - pulmonary attack and died whilst recovered at the San Marco Polyclinic of Pavia aged only 39, on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 4.45 am. His body was laid out in state at the Chiesa di San Astanzio e Antoniano at Vigonzone, where Requiem Mass was also celebrated on Tuesday, January 18, at 15.00 hrs. Internment followed at the Cemetery of Vigonzone.
