A native of Milan, Dom Celestino Maria Colombo, a reflective and remarkably humble Monk, celebrated his first solemn Mass in 1896 after finishing his studies at Seregno. Successively he was appointed as professor of Latin and philosophy. A keen orator and spiritual director to many, in 1907, he was named parish priest and prior of the community of Santa Maria in Campis and lecturer of dogmatic theology at the Diocesan Seminary of Spoleto and later of Norcia.
On February 17, 1914 he was elected as prior of Lendinara, an office he held until Pope Benedict XV elevated the Priory to an Abbey, thus becoming its first Abbot. During his tenure, the Abbey was restored and the centenary of the Miracle of Our Lady at the former priory was celebrated. He assisted several lay people during the difficult period of the Great War and several vocations to the Abbey were attributed to him, through his remarkable talent of an orator.
Founder of ten "Case di Riparazione Benedettina Eucaristica della Federazione di Ghiffa", the Abbot died at Lendinara on September 24, 1935, on the Liturgical Feast Day of Our Lady of Mercedes of a bronco-pneumonia. His funeral saw the participation of hundreds. On September 24, 1936, following the ardent desire of his parishioners, Padre Zilianti exhumed the remains of Dom Celestino Maria Colombo and reinterred them at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pilastrello, under the central nave, with a marble stone marking the vault.
«Qui nella pace dei giusti, sotto le ali materne di Maria, riposa per volontà dei confratelli e per plebiscito di popolo, la Salma dell'Abate P. Celestino Maria Colombo O.B.S. Olivetano primo della serie degli Abati rinnovellò la vita del Santuario, con la magnificenza dei restauri, con la fiamma dello zelo, con l'austerità dell'esempio».
