Birth: Jul. 23, 1920
Death: Aug. 9, 2011

Former Bishop of the Diocese of Beauvais-Noyon-Senlis, Monsignor Adolphe-Marie Gustave Hardy was born in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France, on July 23, 1920, and was ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Nantes at 24 years of age on March 31, 1945.

Professor at the Externat des Enfants of Nantes, Hardy moved to Mali as a Missionary in 1964. Returning back to France two years later due to poor health, he maintained a missionary spirit for the rest of his life.

Secretary of the Comité Épiscopal des Missions Extérieures in Paris between 1966 and 1972, Hardy was assigned as Chaplain of the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre in 1972, and served as Curate for the Parish of Saint-François-Xavier des Missions Étrangères from 1973 till 1985, and Episcopal Vicar between 1981 and 1985.

At 64 years of age, Hardy was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Beauvais, Noyons et Senlis by Pope John Paul II, receiving his Episcopal Consecration on May 12, 1985, from Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, assisted by Archbishop Jacques-Eugène-Louis Ménager and Bishop Emile Marcus PSS., at the Cathedral of Beauvais.

During his brief ten-year-Episcopate, Bishop Hardy managed to introduce the Synod across his Diocese, which saw the participation of some 800 Synodal Teams. He also took the initiative in reorganizing the pastoral territories, creating 45 Parishes.

Member of the Commission Enfance-Jeunesse and of the Commission de la Famille, Bishop Hardy retired from the Pastoral Government of his See on May 13, 1995, and was succeeded by Monsignor Guy Marie Thomazeau.

Upon his retirement, he accepted the appointment of Ecclesiastical Counselor to the UNESCO, a position which he held for eight years. In retirement, he also served as Chaplain to the Sœurs de la Visitation of Nantes.

Monsignor Hardy passed away at the Maison du Bon Pasteur of Nantes, where he resided in his later years, on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the venerable age of 91.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathédrale St. Pierre et St. Paul of Nantes, on Saturday, August 13, at 10.00 am., with Mgr. Thomazeau as Homilist. Internment followed at the Cemetery of Mouzillon, Loire-Atlantique.

"Après avoir partagé la paix et pris place sur le siège épiscopal d'ou' il doit enseigner, le père Hardy présidera l'Eucharistie, tenant au milieu de vous, son peuple, la place du Christ dont il est appelé à être parmi vous et pour vous le signe." - Cardi...(Read more)
