Born in Vescemont, France, on April 4, 1935, Monsignor Robert Lucien Chapuis MEP., was ordained to the Priesthood at 27 years of age through the La Société des Missions Etrangères on December 22, 1962.
At the early age of 33, Chapuis was appointed as the First Bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Mananjary in Madagascar, by Pope Paul VI, receiving his Episcopal Consecration on June 23, 1968, from Archbishop Gilbert Ramanantoanina SJ., assisted by Bishops Jules-Joseph Puset PSS., and Bernard Charles Ratsimamotoana MS.,
The Bishop resigned his Office on December 29, 1973, at 38 years of age when he renounced the Priesthood, and was succeeded by Msgr. François Xavier Tabao Manjarimanana of the Jesuit Fathers. He died on Sunday, March 8, 2009, aged 73, in Epron, Calvados, where his Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, March 11, at 10.30 am.
