Msgr. André-Jacques Fougerat, Former Bishop of Grenoble and Titular Bishop of the See of Alba, was born in Barbezieux, France on February 23, 1902, and was ordained to the Priesthood at the age of 25, on April 16, 1927.

Pope Pius XII named him as Coadjutor Bishop of Grenoble on July 16, 1956. He received his Episcopal Consecration with the Titular See of Caesarea in Mauretania, on the following October 23, from Bishop Jean-Baptiste Mégnin, assisted by Archbishop Emile-Arsène Blanchet and Bishop Jean-Marie Vittoz.

Bishop Fougerat succeeded to the See of Grenoble on January 5, 1957. He later resigned his Office on September 19, 1969, and was named as Bishop of the Titular See of Alba. He moved to Rome, where he was appointed as Canon of the Reverend Chapter of Saint Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica.

A renowned figure in the Educational Field, Fougerat had already distinguished himself whilst undergoing studies in Richemont and later at the Séminaire des Carmes. He served as a Professor at Richemont and taught Philosophy at Saint-Paul, and at the age of 30, was already the Superior of the latter Seminary. He founded the Notre Dame School and Cognac and also distinguished himself through his gallantry during the Second World War, whilst serving as Infantry Captain at the Eastern Front and at Somme.

In Rome, the Bishop served amongst others as Ecclesiastical Counselor within the Secretariat of State of the Vatican City, and later through several International Catholic Organizations. Almoner of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, Msgr. Fougerat died on October 30, 1983, inside his apartment within the Canonica of Saint Peter's in the Vatican City, aged 81. His remains where interred inside the Chapel of Canons at the Campo Verano Cemetery of Rome, on November 10, 1983.
