Monsignor Michael Kelly was the Fourth Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Sydney, Australia.
Born at Waterford, Ireland, to James Kelly and Mary Grant on February 13, 1850, he was educated at Christian Brothers's College, Enniscorthy and at the Classical Academy, New Ross.
He received his Seminary Formation at St. Peter's College, Wexford and at the Irish College of Rome, before being ordained to the priesthood at Enniscorthy on November 1, 1872, by Bishop Thomas Furlong at the age of 22.
Kelly served on the Staff of the House of Missions, Wexford and was Rector of the Irish College, Rome until his appointment as Titular Archbishop of the See of Achrida In Partibus Infidelium on July 16, 1901, following his nomination as Coadjutor Cum Jure Successionis of the See of Sydney, Australia. He received his episcopal consecration on August 15, at St. Joachim's Church, Rome, from Cardinal Francesco Satolli assisted by Archbishop Diomede Panici and Bishop Bernhard Joseph Doebbing OFM.,
The Coadjutor succeeded to the See of Sydney on August 16, 1911, on the demise of Cardinal Moran.
He was named Bishop Assistant at the Papal Throne and Count of the Holy Roman Empire on June 25, 1926, and died peacefully after a three week illness at the age of 90 years on March 8, 1940, at the Cardinal's Palace in Manly, holding a Crucifix and a set of Rosary beads in his hands, in presence among others of Archbishop Normam Thomas Gilroy who holding the right of succession, succeeded him upon breathing his last.
