Derick Daniels, a former executive editor of the Free Press who oversaw its Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the 1967 riot in Detroit, died of lung cancer Saturday at his home in Miami.

While he was Free Press editor, Mr. Daniels introduced changes that included Detroit Magazine and Action Line. Those additions helped close a circulation gap between the Free Press and the Detroit News.

Mr. Daniels is survived by his third wife, Lee Vranes Daniels; two sons from his first marriage, Leigh C., of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Scott J., of Baltimore; and a brother, Dr. Worth B. Daniels of Baltimore.

Derick January Daniels (UNC 1950) last lived in San Francisco and Miami. He was a newspaper editor in Miami and Detroit and chairman of the editorial board of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. He married in 1950, Elizabeth Long Blalock. Their sons are Leigh Churchill who lives in Ann Arbor, Mich. and married in 1983, Evelyn Janice Gauthier, of Salinas, Cal.; and Scott J. Daniels who lives in Baltimore.
