The victim has been identified as Kirby Allan, a well-known musician who started off as a crooner in the Frank Sinatra era. He was killed while helping a woman escape an early morning fire at a Mesa home Thursday.
Fire crews were called to Allan's house in the neighborhood of Gilbert and Brown roads at about 2:30 a.m.

Kirby Allan passed away during a fire at his home in Mesa, Arizona on Thursday, June 16th, 2011. Kirby was born January 12th, 1928 in Prescott, Arkansas as Sidney Allen Pittman.
He enlisted in the Army and served as a medic during World War II. He received his education at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and was known as a performer, recording such tunes as Never, Never, Never and More Bounce To the Ounce in Hollywood during the 1950's.
The majority of his musical work was spent promoting, producing and performing with Chaino releasing many albums, including Eyes of the Spectre which received a 4 star review from Billboard Magazine. Kirby moved to Mesa in 1970 and became a real estate broker and investor until the time of his death.
Kirby is survived by his four children, Jeff, Marc, Monique, and Patric. His six grandchildren include Natosha, Daniella, Rachel, Tyler and Grant as well as his newborn great-granddaughter Aurora.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 28th, 2011 with Funeral Services to be at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Mortuary Chapel 1562 E. Baseline Rd., Mesa, AZ 85204 with interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Queen of Heaven Mortuary.
