Officer John H. Fowler was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.

Circumstance: Officer Fowler of the Seventh Precinct (First & F Street NW), was acting as a guard of a chain-gang, when a prisoner named John Langster, aka "Guinea", aka "George T. Hudson", escaped. Officer Fowler discovered Mr. Langster hiding in an outhouse and attempted to apprehend him. A fight ensued in which Officer Fowler was shot with his own gun and died in the street. John Langster was captured by Officer Boland, at 311 D Street, NE and charged with murder, convicted and hanged.

Officer Fowler was a Civil War veteran, having served as a Private in Company D, 4th Battalion, District of Columbia Infantry.

He was married to Sarah Lloyd Fowler. His funeral was held at his Father-in-Law, Joshua Lloyd's, home located at 243 8th Street SE.

POLICE PERSONALS

Officer Fowler, of the Eighth precinct, on Thursday night arrested John Jackson, a thief, at the corner of L and Fourth streets southeast. At the time he was fleeing for pistol shots that were sent after him by some one whose house he had attempted to rob. A set of burglars' tools were found on him. In Police Court yesterday Judge Bundy gave him three months in the workhouse.
