She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Treadway (1833-1900) and Mary Jane Dozier (1832-1868).

"Marthey" was the 16 year old servant girl for the Lewis Harvey and Mary "Polly" Windsor Harvey living at Fayetteville. The household next door was occupied by Edward Bays and Elizabeth Harvey Bays. After Elizabeth's death, "Marthey" became the new Mrs. Bays.

"Marthey" raised Maggie (Hall) (1873-1962) and bore TEN children: Mary Ellen (Logan), John Thomas, Lottie Faye (Woodrum), Laura Belle (Mitchell), Mollie (Thomas), Della (Bishop), Cynthia (Marcum), Frazier Tyler, Willie Ermon (Beckner), and Wiley French.

Mahala Elizabeth Treadway Bays died of a cerebral hemorage in 1951.
