George Garman was the son of John Philip and Mary Jane Worick Garman. He was raised by his mother and step-father, William Mercer in North Dakata.

As a young man, he lived and worked in MT, ND, and IA. He moved to the Sioux City IA area in 1912. He married Helen Reich Rose and they had three children, Gwendolyn, Georgia, and George.
