Outlaw. Fred, together with his father William (Bill) McCarty and Bill's brother, Tom McCarty, robbed the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Delta, Colorado on 07 Sep 1893. During the robbery, Fred shot and killed Andrew T. Blachly, the bank's cashier, who left behind his widow Mary and eight children. During their escape attempt on horseback, both Fred and Bill were shot and killed by W. Ray Simpson, a sharpshooting hardware merchant. Tom McCarty escaped. Bill and Fred were both buried in an unmarked grave in the Potter's Field section of the Delta Cemetery. On 12 May 2001, a memorial grave marker and historical sign were placed to commemorate the event and the father-son bank robbers.
