James Buchanan was the third of eleven children born in Mercer, Mercer County, PA to Mary Agnes (Jennings) and John Buchanan, Jr. He died in Mercer, PA at the age of 60.

He married Marilda M. Johnson in 1866, and together they had seven children: Ellsworth Harrison, Dolca Mae, Dora Zue, James William, Elizbeth N., John Francis, and George Washington Buchanan.

James served in the American Civil War for the Union and enlisted in Pennsylvania in the Army Infantry. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in the 76th Infantry Regiment, Company B, and fought in the battles of James Island, S.C., Fort Wagoner, S.C., Poctaligo, S.C., and Petersburg, VA.

While in the Battle of Poctaligo in South Carolina on October 22,1862, James suffered a gun shot wound in the left leg above the knee. According to a report filed by C. Byles, examining surgeon, "Applicant favors left leg in walking, and I believe disability is permanent." In 1887 James petitioned the U.S. Government for an increase in his pension of $4.00 a month; and the petition which was filed by a Justice of the Peace reads as follows: "That he believes himself to be entitled to an increase of pension on account of increase of disability that as age advances, his disability grows greater." Rate was increased to $6.00 per month.

James also filed another petition in 1896 claiming that while serving at Fort Fisher, N.C. about Sept. 1864 he contracted disease of lungs and rheumatism due to exposure. In 1896 James was awarded another increase in his pension to $12.00 per month.

According to the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census Records his occupation was a farm laborer.
