PRESS RELEASE: Civil Affairs Soldiers die in Iraq

U.S. Army Special Operations Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Dec. 25, 2005) Two Army Reserve special operations Soldiers died Dec. 23 near Baghdad, Iraq, from injuries sustained when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device there.

Sgt. Cheyenne C. Willey, 36, a Civil Affairs specialist assigned to the 351st Civil Affairs Command, a subordinate unit of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne), died while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A resident of Fremont, Calif., Willey entered the Army in Oakland, Calif., June 23, 1995, and was promoted to a non-commissioned officer on Oct. 1, 2005.

He arrived at the 351 st CACOM, Mountain View , Calif., in June 2005.

Willey deployed in support of operation Iraqi Freedom in the summer of 2005, shortly after his assignment to the 351st CACOM.

His awards included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with a Bronze Star, Army Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Device, Army Service Ribbon, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge and the Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge. He was recommended for the following posthumous awards: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

He is survived by his mother Patsy Miller of Fremont , Calif.
