Obituary, The Baum Bugle, Volume 55, Number 1, Spring 2011:

Elizabeth Maren (1941-2011)

The Oz community mourns the loss of Elizabeth Ann Barrington Marenghi, who passed away on January 26, 2011, in Los Angeles. Know to thousand of fans at Oz festivals across the country as Elizabeth Maren, wife of MGM "Lollipop Guild" Munchkin actor Jerry Maren, she also performed as Elizabeth Barrington in Under the Rainbow (1981) and The Dreamer of Oz (1990), as well as in Annie (1982) and in a 1997 episode of the TV show Seinfield.

For more than twenty years, Chittenango had the great fortune to have Elizabeth and Jerry attend the village's annual Oz-Stravaganza! Many life-long friendships have formed because of Oz festivals, which draw thousands of people to Chittenango and elsewhere year after year to be part of an "Oz family reunion". Elizabeth was a big part of these reunions. Often wearing a "Munchkin by Marriage" T-shirt and an Oz baseball cap, she would eagerly identify Jerry in photographs that he sold to the children. She would laugh at the wondrous smiles on children's faces as the realized, standing next to her, that they were taller than she was. She would graciously accept the lollipop from Jerry on stage while the audience roared with delight as he sang: "We wish to welcome you to Munchkinland!" For many years Elizabeth and Jerry spent their wedding anniversary in Chittenango, with a celebration that included an anniversary cake and a special dance they share.

As word spread of Elizabeth's passing, our Oz family came together via phone, mail, e-mail, and Facebook to console each other as only a family can, and to share memories, pictures, and hugs. Chittenango is raising money toward an L. Frank Baum/Munchkin memorial, and many have asked to donate money to the memorial in Elizabeth's name.

If you attend any of the many Oz events around the country this year, please remember Elizabeth by sharing a story, a smile, or a laugh with any new family member you meet.
