Born to John Heinrich "Henry" (1830-1900) and Lisette (Niebuhr) (1835-1915) Suttmann on the family farm in Ray Township, Franklin County, Indiana. He was the youngest of thirteen children of which only seven lived to adulthood. They were his brothers: John Henry (1856-?), John Frederick (1862-1945), Louis (1864-1939), Fredrick William (1866-?) & Bernard (1871-?) and only sister, Elisabeth (1860-Aft 1940).

Joseph remained with his family, working on the farm until after his marriage to Catherina Boing on 4 Oct 1905 in Franklin County. They had four children: Ida (1908-2005), Edna (1910-2000), Francis (1915-1958) and Ralph (1916-1991). Sometime before 1910 Joseph took his young family and moved to Glendale, Hamilton County, Ohio and found work as a janitor at St. Gabriel Catholic School.

Tragedy struck the young family when his wife's parents and sister all died within a short time of each other. His sister-in-law died at their home in Glendale when she fell into a diabetic coma and never recovered.

All of this must have been particularly hard on his wife for she took her own life in 1918. Fortunately, Joseph had strong support in his family for his wife's half-siblings took in his children for a short time until Joseph could pull things together. Ida and Francis "Frannie" went to Uncle John Bessler's farm and Edna and Ralph to Aunt Mary Bessler Waechter's farm.

By 1930, Joseph was no longer working as a janitor. He now found employment as a laborer in a paper factory and eventually a machinist. He also had remarried to Theresa E. Brown (1881-1963). The family remained in Ohio until Joseph died from a heart attack and complications from diabetes. He was 64.
