Hw was a Confederate Soldier.
1st Cavalry Regiment
He was killed at Todds' Tavern at Spottsylvania Court House.
No better or braver man fell on that bloody field.

I recently visited the Burton cemetery looking for the grave of William Sydney Burton. You commented that the one buried there is his son. If the inscription if correct, this could not be so because this man was born in 1878, and the other William Sydney died in battle in 1862.
I believe this was his nephew.
After the first wife of Alexander Hawkes died, he married the widow of Sydney Burton, who was also the cousin of his first wife. The first wife was Elizabeth Coleman.
She and Alexander Hawkes are my second great grandparents. I am researching Elizabeth and her line.
Note: I am NOT sure he is buried here. But his son or nephew is buried here, William Sidney Burton.
