He was a son of John Archer Bland and Mary Anne Dickinson of Nottoway and Amelia Counties in VA.
HE WAS A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER

He was wounded at Haws Shop. He was lying down with the rest of the command firing upon the enemy and he was struck.
There was also a John E. Bland in this same Company from Amelia County, VA. He died in Camp at Fredericksburg, VA. His parents were Thomas P. Bland and Mary E. Worsham of Nottoway County and Amelia County, VA.
Both Robert, and his cousin John, left college at the University of Virginia to enlist for the War.
They are descendants of Richard Bland (1710-1776) of the First Continental Congress.
The information below is from Barbara Bland and Robert Bland:
Robert Emmett Bland was born 18 July 1833 in Amelia County, VA, the son of John Archer Bland and Mary Ann Dickinson. During the War Between the States he rode with General J.E.B. Stuart and at the end surrendered at Appomattox.
He became the book keeper for what is known now as a conglomerate of railroads and shipping along the Atlantic seaboard.
When Emma B. Walton visited relatives in Norfolk, VA. they met and began a courtship via letters which I have in my possession and reads like a novel!
They finally married in Jacksonville, Illinois, where she was from, on 18 July 1894, on his 61st birthday! What a birthday present.
They lived in Norfolk, VA. when my father, Robert Walton Bland, was born on 14 January 1896!.
Robert Emmett died 5 November 1896 and Emma and her young son came back to Jacksonville, Illinois to live.
Robert Emmett had been married prior to the War to Martha Webster and had three children, Molly, Patti and Willie.
