Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated seventeenth in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1829, in the same class as future Confederate Generals, Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston. He was also the first commanding officer at Fort Duncan in Texas. After the Civil War began, he was promoted to Colonel. He then commanded the 2nd United States Regular Infantry in the Army of the Potomac at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The regiment was engaged in action at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. He received a promotion to Brevet Brigadier General in the Regular Army on March 13, 1865.
